Gaetano Crivaro (Crotone, 1983) is a director and documentary filmmaker based in Cagliari. He graduated in Communication from the Sapienza University of Rome.

During his Erasmus project in Valencia (Spain) he made the documentary I LOVE BENIDORMBENIDORM (2009) winner of the Audience Award at DocumentaMadrid2010 and of the Best Short Film Award at the Bilbao Film Festival and screened at about 50 national and international festivals.

In 2011 he made Good Buy RomaGood Roma (co-directed with Margherita Pisano) which was also selected in more than 50 festivals (Bellaria FF, Ischia FF, Yamagata FF) and won several awards.

In 2012 and 2013, he attended the Master en Documental de Creación at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where he collaborated on making the film DEMONSTRATION by Victor Kossakowsky. 

In 2013, he moved to Sardinia, where he currently lives, and founded the research collective L’AmbulanteL’Ambulante. 

In 2015, he made El VagonEl Vagon, a found-footage experimental short film which has competed at many festivals, including Filmmaker Festival in Milan and was the winner of the Visioni Sarde Award at the VISIONI ITALIANE Festival. 

In 2021, he finished the collective film Rondò finalRondò final, an all-round found footage experiment, in competition at Visions du Réel in Nyon, Festival dei Popoli in Florence and IsReal Festival in Nuoro.

In 2019, he founded in Cagliari Ruga FilmRuga Film, the production company that produces all his works, as well as films by other directors. 

He is one of the directors of the collective film In the penal colonyIn colony, produced by Mommotty (Marco Zucchi Award in Semaine de la Critique – Locarno 2025), while the film Wild ObsessionWild Obsession (Solina Prizes finalist – 2023) is in pre-production.

He devotes much of his research to archive materials and analogue media – especially 16 MM – leading several workshops and collaborative projects.
